Diabetic Footwear
An essential purpose of diabetic shoes is to achieve an accommodating proper fit to avoid
shearing. “Shearing” is movement of the foot inside the shoe. The proper fitting of
diabetic shoes and inserts does this by achieving total contact with the bottom of
the foot. The main difference between diabetic shoes and regular shoes is diabetic
shoes must be deeper than regular shoes in order to properly fit an insert which will achieve
total contact. If a proper insert for a diabetic was placed in a regular shoe, the shoe would
typically be too tight, which would simply add to the risk of other complications. In addition to
extra depth,a good diabetic shoe provides many other features to help accommodate the
diabetic foot and prevent further complications.
Many diabetics are susceptible to foot complications due to poor circulation, which often leads
to neuropathy—a loss of feeling or loss of protective sensation in the extremities. Due to this
loss of protective sensation, if a diabetic is wearing poorly fit shoes, they may develop sores on
their feet and may not even feel them. This can lead to foot complications getting worse if
they’re not given the proper care. Also, since they have poor circulation, the body may not be
able to heal properly because antibodies in the bloodstream may not be reaching the problem
area adequately.
